Fuck

Just. Fuck.

I wouldn't have thought it possible, but I've been too kind to Lieberman. At least the Republicans are prepared to allow 450,000 (edit: sorry, 45,000) Americans to die every year because of partisan politics, an insistence on party unity, and a total refusal to reconsider their ludicrous obsession with blocking any government intervention that doesn't involve building new weapons or screwing the gays.

Hmm, yet another blow for the public option. To be honest though the public option is far from the deal breaker – it’s something that would be nice as it will likely lower premiums – but is more of a like to have than a need to have in the current set up. The priority has got to be universal coverage, or as close to it as they can get. Therefore the essentials are the compulsory insurance element, the funding for those who need it to afford this compulsory insurance, and the removal of the various exclusions and deductibles in coverage. It would be nice to have the insurance companies make less money, but certainly isn’t the ball game. Get 99% of people covered and then once that is universally excepted as a good thing I suspect ideas that will lower peoples healthcare spending (either by way of premiums or taxes) will get more general support.

Of course I still think they need a single payer system – but that’s not going to happen anytime soon.
